Refresh or Replace? Discover the Best Tips for Outdoor Cushion Care

Wild weather and seasons transitioning, it's essential to assess whether your outdoor cushions need replacement or can continue to serve with proper maintenance. Consider the following indicators:

  • Mould and Mildew: Significant mould presence not only mars appearance but also poses health risks. If extensive, replacement is advisable.

  • Discoloration: Fading or uneven color diminishes aesthetic appeal. Severe cases may warrant new cushions.

  • Structural Integrity: Sagging, deformation, or compromised support indicates the cushion's core has deteriorated, suggesting it's time for a replacement.

  • Persistent Odours: Embedded smells from prolonged use or exposure can be challenging to eliminate, signaling the need for new cushions.

  • Outdated Style: If your cushions no longer align with your aesthetic preferences or appear outdated, refreshing them can revitalise your outdoor space.

If your cushions exhibit these signs, investing in replacements ensures comfort and visual appeal. We have a huge range of fabrics that will bring your living areas to life for years ahead of relaxed indoor outdoor lounging and dining.

Otherwise, regular maintenance can extend their lifespan. Read on for how to care for your outdoor cushions.

Ensuring your outdoor cushions remain pristine requires thoughtful care and protection against extreme weather conditions. At Tropique, we understand the importance of maintaining the beauty and longevity of your outdoor spaces. Here's how you can safeguard your cushions throughout the year:

Understanding Outdoor Fabric Options

Selecting the right fabric is foundational to cushion durability. We primarily offer two high-quality materials:

  1. Sunbrella Fabric: Known globally, Sunbrella is a high-performance outdoor fabric extensively used in the furniture and marine industries, as well as awnings, and umbrellas.

Tropique has incorporated Sunbrella and other solution dyed acrylic fabrics into our cushions for lounges, dining chairs, daybeds, and accessory pieces. This "solution-dyed" material ensures colour vibrancy and resilience against environmental factors as each fibre is solution dyed before woven, milled in the US and Europe.
  2. Solution Dyed Olefin & Polypropylene: These materials are fantastic and complete our range of outdoor fabrics at Tropique, they are widely used on outdoor furniture and an excellent option for hospitality & healthcare spaces. They combine water-resistant properties with a soft feel, making them ideal for comfortable and stain resistant seating. Tropique's outdoor fabric collection is curated locally from European design houses. Ask us for what is best for your outdoor cushion requirements.

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Regular upkeep not only preserves appearance but also extends cushion life:

  • Routine Cleaning:

    • Promptly address spills to prevent stains.
    • Brush off loose dirt and debris regularly.
    • For deeper cleaning, use a mild soap solution, gently scrub with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and air dry.

  • Mould and Mildew Prevention:

    • While Sunbrella fabrics resist mildew, dirt accumulation can foster growth. Clean affected areas with a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per 4 liters of water. Spray, let sit for 15 minutes, scrub gently, rinse, and air dry.
    • For Spun Polyester, a mixture of one part vinegar to nine parts water can be effective. Follow the same cleaning steps as above.

Protecting Cushions from Extreme Weather

Australia's diverse climate necessitates proactive measures:

  • Sun Exposure:

    • Prolonged UV exposure can cause fading, especially in Spun Polyester fabrics. Position furniture in shaded areas or use protective covers when not in use.

  • Rain and Moisture:

    • While our fabrics are water-resistant, it's advisable to store cushions in a dry place during heavy rain or when not in use for extended periods.

  • Cold and Frost:
    • In colder regions, store cushions indoors during winter months to prevent potential damage from frost.
Enhancing Fabric Longevity

Over time, even durable fabrics benefit from additional protection:

Reapplication of Protective Coatings: Sunbrella fabrics come with a water and stain repellent finish that may require replenishing after thorough cleaning or prolonged use. We recommend using 303® Fabric Guard (303 Fabric Guard restores water & stain repellence as though straight from the time of manufacture). Ensure the fabric is clean and completely dry before application.

    Caring for Zippers

Zippers are integral to cushion functionality and require attention:

    • Maintenance Tips:
      • In coastal areas with high salinity, regularly rinse zippers with fresh water to prevent salt buildup and corrosion.
      • Periodically apply a zipper lubricant, such as a silicone spray, to ensure smooth operation.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure your Tropique outdoor cushions remain vibrant and comfortable, enhancing your outdoor living experience across all seasons.
